I watched this Indian Pond Heron for at least an hour as he waited virtually motionless on a reed raft for a fish to come within striking range. So intent was he on catching a meal he either didn't realise I was virtually right above him or simply didn't care.

The water was crystal clear in the small pool and I could quite easily see the dozens of little fish that were tantalisingly just out of his strike reach.

As is always the case with Herons the eventual strike was lightening fast and I was shocked at the size of the fish he pulled from the pool, I was also quite amazed that the Heron had actually speared the fish rather than grab it in its bill.

Almost instinctively the Heron took its prey away from the waters edge and for such a large fish swallowed it quickly and with ease.
